Navigating Supply Shifts and Regional Demand

In our latest market report, Anthony from the Feed Central/Local Ag team breaks down the current trends shaping the fodder industry across the region. From dry conditions in the East to high-quality stock in the South, there are key opportunities for both buyers and growers to move product efficiently as we head into the Easter break.

The East: High Demand Meets Logistics Challenges

We are currently seeing a significant surge in activity East of the Newell Highway. Due to prevailing dry conditions in these areas, there is a high demand for quality fodder. However, this demand comes with a few logistical hurdles:

  • Distance: As local supplies tighten, product is being sourced from further away.
  • Freight Costs: Rising fuel concerns and longer travel distances are making it increasingly difficult and costly to transport product into these thirsty regions.

For Growers in the East: If you have product in the shed near the Newell or surrounding areas, now is the time to act. Because you are closer to the demand, you can help alleviate freight pressures and secure a premium price while the need is high.

The South: Quality Stock and Strategic Pricing

In contrast to the East, the South currently has plenty of product available. We are seeing excellent quality fodder sitting in sheds, fully backed by feed tests and inspections, and ready for immediate dispatch.

  • Advice for Southern Growers: With local movement being slower, now is a great time to review your pricing. By adjusting your price point to account for the freight costs required to reach the high-demand areas in the East, you can ensure your product keeps moving.
